Fern Acres Hub, Puna Mākaukau now has five trained and certified chainsaw safety experts, marking a significant step in disaster mitigation and preparedness. Under the guidance of Justin Barrios from Backyard Monkey, these training sessions are a proactive effort to help residents across Hawaiʻi Island become better equipped to independently support their neighbors, ʻohana, and each other.

After every training session, it's inspiring to see local individuals take the necessary steps to protect those around them, ensuring they can better support their families and friends in times of need.

"In rural areas, such as Puna, downed trees are a large part of damage assessment and response following an event. I am so pleased and excited to have our first cohort of trained, certified sawyers to assist our community with safe tree removal" Claudia Ziroli, Puna Mākaukau Fern Acres Hub.

"Most adults have been cutting trees for a while, and you learn some really bad habits. This training has shown me a much safer way to cut trees" Training Participant.
