Introducing the 2023 Vibrant Hawaiʻi Art Fellows

Updated: Oct 2, 2023

We are thrilled to announce the official launch of our Vibrant Hawaiʻi Art Fellowship in partnership with the national initiative, One Nation One Project. We received over 100 applications for the Fellowship and through a careful selection process, 11 Hawaiʻi Island artists were selected, representing each district of Hawaiʻi Island. These artists practice traditional arts, literary arts, performing arts, and visual arts. 2023 Art Fellows: Abbie Rabinowitz (Puna Mauka), Angaea Cuna (South Kona), Avalon Paradea (Waikoloa), Erin Chung (North Hilo), Jaymeson Lōkela Sanchez (Puna Mauka), Jeramy Madrid (Waimea), Kerry Green (Kaʻū), Marata Tamaira (Puna Mauka), Nicole Gomes (North Kohala), Ninamarie Bell (North Kona), and Sara Stover (North Kona). On Friday, August 18th, the Art Fellowship launched with an in-person convening. Project Lead, Aliza Gebin reflected on the day, “There was a distinct curiosity, dedication, and synergy that was palpable during our initial gathering. The rich dynamic and talent within the fellowship will fuel not only the growth of these individual artists professionally and personally, but also has the potential to catalyze a ripple effect, helping our communities connect, or re-connect, with the transformative power of the arts in all its forms. An impactful moment to witness was the conversation and artistic expression that transpired when fellows were asked to consider their untold stories regarding resources and support for local artists. Collectively, the fellows created a painting that communicates the unique challenges and opportunities they face as artists on Hawaiʻi island. This piece of art contains important information about the economic, social, emotional, and professional landscape these artists are navigating.”
